  1. Excellent down parka 5 stars
    I’ve the same in blue,
If I had to suggest something 1/ /A larger bottom black protection area (which is now on the new model ) and a hood more stuffed with down like the Mountain hardwear Sub zero SL down jacket.
    Anyhow very satisfied of it.

  2. Hi Canon,

Thank you for weighing in on the Mt. Hardwear SL parka. And I’ll agree with the five-star rating. The parka is a go-to outerwear for super cold and foul mountain weather (high desert is brutal also). The SL parka we had for the product review got into deep winter cold, snow, ugly wind, and sleet. And this SL will be on many winter outings going forward; the quality and durability of the SL is expected from Mt. Hardwear.

  3. Hello all! I will be moving to an area with temperatures dropping down to -31F (-35C). I was wondering if you could really stay warm with this jacket on under these conditions, or would you still feel the chill…Also if anyone has any info in regards to sizing (Small Size in particular) that would be great. Thanks!

  4. Hi KC,

Yes, the Mt. Hardwear SL parka is good for the negative temps you described. My SL is extra large and it works well with under layers of garments. As for how well a size small will fit you, I don’t know. It’s best to go to the Mt. Hardwear site and inquire about sizing. You might send your shoulder, chest, height measurements to them and get a recommendation. With the low temperatures you describe, you’ll be wearing layers, hopefully. But in my experience, with this parka in the backcountry with serious cold and wind, the SL parka’s insulation was never in question.

  5. Great review. I also need some help with sizing. You mention you wear XL, do you mind sharing how tall and heavy you are (ballpark!). That’ll give a more realistic view as I find the manufacturers size charts vary significantly based on the product. Thanks!

  6. Hi Graham,

I’m about 6’2″ and range in weight from 195 to 215. It’s been below zero and low single digits here in the Northern Rockies. I’m wearing my SL exclusively right now. Consider a size larger than you would wear for street clothes so you can layer up your clothes.

    Best,
