Paul Wendland Ice Climbs In Pictured Rocks, Michigan

Pictured Rocks Dryer HoseMy name is Paul Wendland and I’m from Madison Wisconsin. My favorite place to hike and ice climb is Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This is a stunning area of huge sandstone cliffs overlooking the southern shore of Lake Superior. It can be a cold, forbidding and thoroughly icy place in winter, a sunny and pristine paddling paradise in summer. I’ve hiked the cliffs, paddled the waters and climbed its frozen waterfalls (see pic of my “frogleggin” the Dryer Hose) for years, always with a grin at my luck to have such a beautiful place at hand!

  1. What a fabulous photo! Nice to think such spectacular places exist in the Midwest. Ice climbing is a tad cold for my taste, but it sounds like ‘climber bliss” in the description. Impressive.

  2. It amazes me when I realize Paul not only climbs waterfalls in the winter, but he swims up them in he summer as well.
